Russia welcomes Wang Yi's visit and the positive turn in India-China ties
Russia’s warm welcome to Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s visit to India marks a significant turn in regional diplomacy. Moscow’s remarks highlight the growing importance of India-China cooperation, particularly under the frameworks of BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO). Russia, facing Western sanctions, has positioned itself as a reliable partner, supplying more than 40% of India’s crude oil through special trade mechanisms designed to bypass restrictions.

At the same time, Moscow is strengthening defence ties with New Delhi, pledging collaboration in jet engine development and the ambitious Sudarshan Chakra missile defence system. By rejecting “illegal” unilateral sanctions and advocating for collective resistance, Russia is calling for solidarity among Global South nations. This stance not only underscores its long-standing partnership with India but also signals a shift towards multipolarity in global affairs.

As External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar engages in talks with Sergey Lavrov, the deepening India-Russia-China axis may emerge as a counterweight to Western dominance. The path forward will depend on whether the three powers can balance competition with cooperation, and translate diplomatic goodwill into tangible outcomes.
